Modern Bohemian Bedroom Remodel

It’s been some time since I’ve shared a personal update here on Femme Nouveau, and I’m too excited to create any build up, so let’s get right to it! After almost 8 years of marriage and 10 years together, hubby and I are expecting! I’ll save the gender announcement and the journey to this point for another post, but for now, let’s just say I’m beyond eager for the little one to get here.

To say I’m nesting is a bit..well, let’s just say I’m not at that stage yet as I’m only 5 months in. But as nesting would suggest, we decided to do some gentle remodeling around the house in prep for the baby, and since there’s plenty of time before baby gets here, we started with our master bedroom. We previously hosted on Airbnb for the last year, so the rest of the house had already gotten a nice refresh. Our style is a mix between modern and bohemian, so we continued with that theme in the bedroom.

Now, since we’re expecting, doing this remodel had to come as low cost as possible. The best way I could see fit to make a drastic change without having to break the bank was by giving the room a nice pop of color. We live in an apartment, and for those of you who are also renting, definitely check with your landlords about the rules on painting. It’s a fairly low cost solution to making your place feel more like a home custom to your unique style.

For our room, we opted to paint only one wall, and if you’re going bold, this will give you the drama you’re looking for without swallowing you whole. Trust me, back in the day I called myself turning my teenage bedroom into a Caribbean oasis by painting my entire bedroom a sorbet-ish orange and um…my eyes screamed when the painters were done. We toned it down by painting opposing walls white, and that definitely eased the eye sore.

Anyway, for our room we picked from the Behr Premium Plus, paint and primer in one line, which has low odor and low VOCs (volatile organic compounds, carbon-containing substances that easily become vapors or gases). Teenage me couldn’t let my tropical oasis bedroom dreams die, so we kept that vibe and this time we got it right. The color of choice was Tsunami, a deep teal color that I’ve had my eye on for a while now. I’ve been keeping my room inspiration on my Oasis Mid Mod Bedroom board on Pinterest which helped when it came time to style the room.

Since we wanted to keep it low cost, we luckily had a lot of items that we were able to move from other rooms in the house into the room to make the look complete. I still want to purchase a new rug, get hubby to clean out his stuff under the bed (!), and maybe a few accent pieces, but overall, we made it work with what we have. The vintage chest was a purchase we found at a thrift store probably 2-3 years ago, and we moved plants from our upstairs loft into the room to add to our tropical vibe.

Well, there’s not much else to it, but if you have any questions, drop a comment below!
